The Album of the Week Award goes to…
We’d like to congratulate Pharrell on the huge success he’s had on his second album G I R L, which released on March 3, 2014. After an 8 year break, let’s review what he brought to the table shall we?
It sure seems as though this talented singer, recording artist, instrumentalist and producer has found his groove. Sailing steadily across the charts for contributions of his engineering and producing skills to a variety of artists. For six months, from June through December 2013, Pharrell sat comfortably within 10… Yes, TEN albums that were in the top 5 of the Billboard 200! The G I R L album has had a few of those successful singles to boast about including “Happy” from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, “Marilyn Monroe” and “Come Get It Bae” which features Miley Cryrus…
So yes, we know he has mad skills… G I R L delivers an astounding array of soulfulness, disco, and stomping sass combining eras of music blended together perfectly to deliver a sound that’s 100% unique.
In response to the “Blurred Lines” controversy, Pharrell’s attempt at clearing the air is the release of this album. He is making an attempt to educate us on his position of what his attitude towards women truly is. “Blurred Lines’” questionable lyrics left its mark. William’s is quoted for stating “There’s an imbalance in society, in my opinion, and that’s going to change. A world where 75% of it is run by women – that’s a different world. That’s gonna happen, and I want to be on the right side of it when it does.”
The album opens with a song titled “Marilyn Monroe”, lyrically discussing helpless romantics and perfect ladies. The instrumentalism of the opening track begins with an enchanting string orchestra, however quickly becomes very Micheal Jackson sounding to match the Thriller type bumping bass and Pharell’s signature “skittering” beats.
Finally, he classically turns up the funk with the unique upbeat tempo in “It Girl” and undoubtedly sets him apart. All in all, this is an album you could add in its entirety to your playlist, kick back, go for a drive, relax and enjoy repeatedly.
Guest Appearances on this album feature duets with Justin Timberlake (“Brand New”) and Alicia Keys (“Know Who You Are”), and other appearances by Kelly Osbourne, Timbaland, Miley Cyrus, Daft Punk, JoJo, Tori Kelly and Leah LaBelle.
At the present time this album has sold over 450,000 copies worldwide! Its no wonder this masterpiece; by Pharrell Williams, has received generally positive reviews worldwide, and has made everyone “HAPPY”!!
